Can I grow a peach tree from the pit?

In the past I've tried to take apple and lemon seeds from the fruit to try and grow a tree, but I've never been successful. I had one of the best peaches ever on Saturday and I savd the pit/seed. Is it possible to grow a tree from it, and if so, what have I been wrong all these years?

  1. You can grow a peach tree from seed but the tree won't produce the same fruit as the parent tree.  The same is true with apples and pears.  Most fruit trees are propagated by grafting.  A cutting known as a scion from the tree you wish to duplicate is attached to a rootstock.  The scion will get nourishment and grow from the rootstock.  The fruit will be the same as the tree the scion was taken from and the rootstock determines if the tree will be standard size,  semi dwarf or dwarf.  Standard size trees can be grown directly from cuttings.  If you have access to the tree that your peach was picked from you can ask for some cuttings and try to get them to take root.  Or you can try your luck at grafting,  but its a tricky thing to make it work.  Fruit trees need to be pruned once a year.  That would be a good time to ask for cuttings.

& you might want to take the weather factor in & how far down you put it.

  4. Yes you can but you have to be very patient.  Best way I have seen is to put the pit (the actual seed is inside the pit) into a can of good quality soil mix about 1 inch down.  Keep it moist and in a warm area with some light.  Took mine about 1-11/2 months to germinate but then had a seedling that I could plant in bigger pot till it was big enough to go outside.  It is now a 15 foot peach tree that gives big fruit, when i am good enough to thin it.  Other than that it is good fruit just a little small.  Good luck
