Question:

Can I grow pumpkins on sod?

I grow pumpkins every year and battle weeds over and over. I was wondering how well would pumpkin vines grow on short grass? Has anyone out there ever tried this? I was thinking about digging a 2x2 square foot hole and putting fertilizer in it and plant pumpkins. I could mow around it and never have to pull or pick weeds. Is this an idea worth trying?

  1. I don't know, pumpkins are pretty hard to contain - the vines, that is - to grow in a straight line like what you're talking about, more or less.  I've had pumpkin vines grow on and around and across my sod lawn -- a squirrel must have planted the seeds because I surely didn't.

If that's what you want, sure they'll grow but it won't do much for the health of your sod lawn.
