Can I hang a 42" th on a plaster wall?

I want to hang my new 42 inch flat screen on my plaster wall. I have a very old house and I am afraid that it will fall.

It is not a good idea to hang that television straight on the wall unless you have a stud to support it. Even the lighter 42in televisions are at least 40lbs. If you don't think it could support a pair of 20lbs dumbbells, then don't risk your television.
