For the penultimate stage in Chile, the organizers have devised a tough one for the contenders: 508 km against the clock and all possible difficulties in one route alternating between sand dunes, off-road, rios, sand dunes again and a vast off-road section near Copiapo. On the race side, this stage will undoubtedly be the last chance for Frenchman Stéphane Peterhansel (BMW), who is now 21'11 behind the raid leaders. The biggest asset of the Vesoul driver is the team struggle between the leader in the standings, Spain's Carlos Sainz (VW) and his Qatari team mate Nasser Al-Attiyah (VW), second in the rankings just 1'22 shy of the Spaniard. Having lost by 2'12 last year, Al-Attiyah (VW) wants revenge and will try anything to steal the first place back from Sainz. In the bike category, the situation is more or less the same: the race has become a duel between Cyril Despres (KTM) and Marc Coma (KTM) who are just 7'24 in the general standings. After a 10-minute penalty on stage 4, the Frenchman has started to gain back minute after minute from his main rival who has been trying to control the race and will start today again right behind Despres. To be followed as well is "local kid" Francisco "Chaleco" Lopez Contardo (Aprilia), yesterday's winner, who will certainly aim for another stage victory on home turf before reentering Argentina.
