I have a michigan license, and michigan plates on my car, but i live in chicago. Also, i recently bought a motorcycle and need to register it to get a plate for it. Will the DMV make me switch all of my information to Illinois before they will allow me to get an Illinois plate for the bike? I dont plan on staying here much longer than a year, thats why i dont want to switch everything over and have to switch it back when i go back to michigan.

  1. Yep you have to tag it where you live and there's usually a penalty if you go past that states requirement (for instance sometimes they give you 10 days to do it after moving to a new state) If you have a home (mailing address) in both places and you work in both places there may be some type of exception but wherever you work is probally where you live.

  2. You have to tag it where  ever you live. WHich ever state you're physical address and drivers liscense is in. If you dont switch your drivers liscense over you could get fined"ticketed".  When you switch address, you must switch license and registration for that state.

  3. Either get a tag for the bike from Michigan or you'll have to switch everything to Illinois.  Legally you're supposed to switch it all to Illinois, but you probably could get away with a Michigan tag.  It's a bunch of work either way.
