  1. NO.

You will have to transfer everything.

I live in NYC and I had similar situation when I move to Maui (now I moved back) and I wanted to get a motorcycle license.

    Good luck...

  2. Although each state has different laws, they're very similar when it comes to Driver's Licenses.  When you move to a new state, you are expected to not only turn-in your old license and apply for a new one, you're also legally bound to register your vehicle in the new state.

Now, that's not to say that people don't get away with not doing so.  Those are two of the less-enforced state laws.  Although, if you are the type of person who gets speeding tickets, you'll most likely also get a ticket for not having transferred them along with your first speeding ticket in the new state.  So it's really best to do so.

Some states don't require that you take a test when transferring.  I am from California and just moved to Kansas this year.  I had a California Class A CDL with motorcycle endorsement.  I paid $25 and now I have a Kansas Class A CDL with motorcycle endorsement.  The only thing they didn't transfer directly was my HAZMAT endorsement because they want me to get a new background check with TSA.

Point is this:  if you go to the NY DMV and get your motorcycle endorsement NOW, then when you move to NC they will most likely just transfer it over no problem.  I don't know about NY, but it usually just takes $20 and a 40 question test to add motorcyle to your license (only a handfull of states actually make you do a motorcycle driving test).  They'll have the study guide (driver's handbook) for the test at the DMV.  Besides, if you get it now, you might be able to put-off transferring it to NC for a while (because do you really want to carry a NC ID?)

  3. Nope. You'll have to transfer your drivers license to NC then go for the moto license.

  4. No.  You either have to get a motorcycle endorsement on your NY licence, or you have to swap your NY licence for a NC licence.  You can't hold 2 driver's licences at the same time.
