Question:

Can I have my auto insurance premium returned back to me?

Yesterday, while trying to get a inspection sticker. I was rejected because according to the RMV my registration was revoked due to an insurance cancellation or change in insurance. The revocation took place 10 months ago! I have been driving around with no registration and I believe that also means the the insurance is invalid. (Does that sound right to anyone?) 10 months ago I did change insurance carriers, so that could be the change that the RMV is talking about. But someone at the insurance agency did not update information the RMV. I live in Mass. So I don't know exactly what the laws state. And also I had already paid all of my premiums. Do you think I was covered by insurance? Today the insurance agent did clear it up so my registration is no longer revoked but it was a very long day anyway. So what do you think? Elizabeth.

  1. The ins co will only return part of your premium if you cal them and ask for it to be canceled. Then they will refund what part you haven't used, but will not directly pro rate it, as insurance for the shorter period would cast more.

  2. No you can not have your premium returned due to your registration violation.

Most likely your registration was canceled due to some lapse in coverage. Possibly before you obtained your current policy or perhaps a lapse during the current policy period.

It is your responsibility to maintain your vehicle registration, not the insurers.

It does not mean your insurance is invalid. It just means that you failed to take care of this problem 10 months ago when you were in violation of your states financial responsibility requirements. If you have your current information on your drivers license and registration you would have received a notice in the mail. Many people casually forget to keep their address information up to date. The state would have mailed any such notice to the address's they have on record at the time of violation.

If your insurance was invalid the agent would not have been able to clear it up for you.

You also need to check your insurance and verify that you provided the correct Vin number for your vehicle to your insurer.

    Good luck

  3. You did all you needed to do - have your current insurance company or agent send proof of insurance to the RMV for the 10 months in question.  Your insurance was still valid, they have provided coverage for you for the last 10 months, no refund is due to you.
