well the phrase to have it and eat it - have means to keep it whole or preserve it - so you cannot keep it whole/preserve it & eat it at the same time

Of course you can. What good is cake if you can't eat it. You can't decorate with it, it doesn't make for good sporting equipment, it won't hold your pictures on the wall, you can't vacuum the floor with it, you can't air up the tires on your car with it, it won't fetch a ball if you throw it, it won't tune in to the latest episode of American Idol, it won't transport you over the Atlantic Ocean, it won't do you any good unless you eat it.

And it's kind of hard to eat a cake if you don't have one.
