Can I have tri citizenship in the US? My mother was naturalized in Venezuela and had Venezuelan citizenship when I was born but now she applied for american citizenship and has that. Also, Her father (my grandfater) was naturalized in Switzerland, and still has his Swiss citizenship. My mom has american and swiss citizenship but doesn't know if she still has Venezuelan citizenship, but she did register her and her marriage in the Swiss embassy. My grandfather already tells me I have swiss citizenship and that I have until 18 years old to choose if I want to keep it or not?? he wasn't really clear on that. He told me that now I have to call the Swiss consulate in New York to get my swiss passport. But, my real question is about Venezuelan citizenship, I want it, but how do I get it, and how do I know if my mom still has her venezuelan citizenship after applying for american citizenship through being a resident. My father is a naturalized american and i am too. Please help me!

  1. US doesn't recognize dual citizenship

  2. Your mother was a Venezuelan citizen at the time of your birth, so you have a claim to Venezuelan citizenship by birth to a Venezuelan citizen.  Were you born in Venezuela and have a Venezuelan birth certificate showing your mother as Venezuelan citizen?  Did your mother register your birth as born to a citizen abroad with the Venezuelan consulate if you were born outside Ven.?  If born outside Ven., does your birth cert state your mother's citizenship as Ven?

If you are under 18, have proof that you were born to a Venezuelan citizen, check with the nearest Venezuelan consulate about getting a passport/proof of citizenship.  Also check whether Venezuela considers taking the US oath of citizenship as an automatic renunciation of Venezuelan citizenship (some don't), and ask your mom whether she ever officially renounced her Vem. citizenship at a Ven. counsulate.  Although the US does not recognize dual citizenship, your mother may still be considered by Ven. as a Ven. citizen.

Your situation is very complicated due to this constant changing of citizenships of your parents!
