Can I have two types of rats?

Question

I was thinking of going to the pet store to get two female rats but I was wondering if I could get a dumbo rat and a fancy rat or would I have to get two of the same kind of rat like two dumbos instead.

If you can help thank if not its ok!

Dumbos and fancy rats are not different species of rats.  Dumbos are just a genetic defect that people have bred cuz it looks cool and cute.  There aren't any different species of rats, so whatever color, look, etc you want to pair up is fine (providing they are of the same s*x).

As for adopting rats, please consider checking out your local animal shelter.  When they do get rats, they are usually there for many many months before getting adopted.  The cost is about the same, but the money you spend will go towards saving other animals vs a big corporation.

It will be fine. Rats are not prejudice about looks. Right now I have 2 hairless and I'm getting a Harley rat as soon as she is ready to be weaned from mother. But I know from past rats that they are fine to mix. Just make sure that they are the same gender.

I was just at the pet shop and I saw Dumbo, Fancy and Blue Rats all in the same cage and they loved being together. They snuggled up in a huge igloo so I'm guessing that would be fine to have different rats.

yes you can have two different types of rats...i have 3 female fancy rats and 1 dumbo female and they all get along great...and its a good thing you are getting females they are more fun and they get along in communities better than males...males are more of the loners..

There is no such thing as different "types" of rats. A rat is a rat. It is all the same species. There is no such thing as "fancy" rat either. That's just the term for all the rats that are not wild. So all pet rats are "fancy", and all other rats are wild and not pets so you don't need to worry about them.

Dumbo is nothing more than the type of ears. Just like the many colours rats come in, it is only appearence. There are many more variations of rats on top of just colour, like rex, tailless and hairless. But they are all the same rats.

Yes, dumbos and fancies can go together fine, but some stores have offers of two fancies for one price, and two dumbos for another, so it is your choice.
