I have two goldfish in a smallish tank (about 6L). Ive had them for about three years. One is larger than the other, about 5c. and pretty bulky. The other is small and thin, with thin long fins, The small one is sick and the tips of its fins are black. Every now and again i find it floating on top of the water looking pretty sick. This has happened before, a few months ago, and the fish recovered. Now it is sick again. Does anyone know if there is anything i can do to help it recover?

  1. take it to the specialised vet

  2. You can ask in a pet show for some medication to put into water.

  3. It sounds as though your fish had swimbladder (fairly common) its a problem with the fishes digestive system where gas collects in the stomach and make bouyency difficult and puts fish of their appetite but you can buy treatment from a pet store for about £5 but a better treatment is getting some frozen garden peas and boiling them and then taking the skins of and feeding them to your fish. It cured my fish of swimbladder. :) Hope this helps x x x

  4. Well, your goldfish are going to die if they aren't moved immediately to a larger tank. Chances are, they will die anyway though.

I'd think the only thing you can do is maybe try some aquarium salt [not table salt] and move them to a more suitable tank.

A fancy goldfish needs 20 gallons to itself, a common goldfish needs 55 gallons to itself. The first fish you mentioned sounds like a fancy, if it's shaped like a golf ball then it needs 20 gallons. The long slender one will need 55 gallons. Make sure the fancy goldfish gets enough food too. Often they will starve with common goldfish in the tank because the common goldfish are much faster than they are.

  5. put feeds 3 times a day, 7 days a week.
