I have been living in London for 2 years, and am I on a South African passport and have a South African drivers license. I plan to go over to Ireland and hire a car for a few days. Do you know if I am able to hire a car and drive on a SA license?

  1. I think as long as your driver's licence is printed in English, most car hire companies will accept it, so you won't require an International Licence. It would need to be endorsement free as well.

When you find a car hire company you want to go with, you can double check with them, but I think you should be fine.

  2. I don't see why not.  I think as long as you have a valid driver's license, you're allowed to rent a car.

According to Avis: If you rent abroad:  You will need the original licence and an international licence in Australia but not in the USA, Canada, South Africa and most European countries.

I would assume that's the same with any car rental place.

  3. you shouldn't have a problem with driving on a SA drivers license, however most hire companies have an age requirement for car rental and driving a rental car, 25 years old I believe. I would definitely call in advance if you're under 25.
