Can I hire a car in the UK with a Spanish licence?

Question

I know that a Spanish licence is valid in the UK, however in the car rental firm's web page, the small print in the terms and conditions says that if licence isn´t in english - I need to provide a translation (ie. international licence).

In practice do they really make you provide it?

It seems a bit silly to me, as the licence has an identical format, just instead of saying name: x*x it says nombre: x*x & etc... surely they can figure it out!

International driving licences are easily available, you dont need to pass a test, the AA used to issue them, try them first, just go into an AA shop with your licence

Try a smaller, more local rental firm.

However, if an international licence is a legal requirement, their hands are tied.
