  1. Hi Lisa,

First, let me commend you for even thinking about taking on this challenge and responsibility.  Not a lot of older sisters would even consider it!

You didn't mention where you live, but I did find a site that I want to share with you which offers a summary of the homeschooling requirements and laws by state (I'm assuming you're in the US?).  Here's the site:  http://www.hslda.org/laws/default.asp

Click on a state or a US territory (at the bottom) and it'll take you to specific regulations in your area.

Best of luck to you and your sister!

  2. Yea, I'm sure you can find a way to do it. I mean, legally she doesn't have to be in school past the age of 16. So that would be in a year or so? In Michigan, it looks like it has to be a parent or legal guardian who is teaching, or have a certified nonpublic teacher work with her. Unless you can claim to have a religious objection to certification, lol.

I'd go to the library and do some research. It's a tough endeavor, but hopefully your sister would be very self motivated.

Check out the Teenage Liberation Handbook. I've never read it, but it helped some of my friends start homeschooling.

Good luck! I empathize with your sister -- public schools just aren't for everyone.

  3. I believe you can,  most states provide for FAMILY to homeschool.  check the hslda site and see what it says.

What a great big sister you are.  I guess you already realize the importance of education.   I am glad you can be there for your sister.  GOOD LUCK!  http://www.hslda.org/laws/analysis/Michi...   well heres the link,  it does say legal guardian.  Maybe you can find a loopole.

I do think the loopole would be that if you got her an online class and then she could take it anywhere. Or you could maybe be her tutor?

  4. Which state do you live in?  Every state has different rules and laws.  In most states, you homeschooling her is fine, as long as your mom "oversees" (i.e., knows what's going on and fills out any necessary paperwork).  If you can let us know where you are, we can give you specifics.

Edit - I believe as long as your mom is "officially" overseeing her education, you can homeschool her.  Just make sure that your mom is in the loop, and that her signature is on everything.

  5. Wow, your sister is lucky to have you. Just make sure your mom follow the laws for your state and you will be fine.

    Warm Regards,

    jana
