Can I homeschool my friends children in the state of florida?

If they are registered with an umbrella school (a special private school for homeschooling families) and they allow you to do so, or if you hold the necessary qualifications to act as a private tutor.

Unless you hold a Current and Valid Florida Teaching Certification the answer is NO.

If you do it, the parent or guardian would have to claim THEY are doing it and so you would have to work TOGETHER every step of the way and hope the children keep their mouths shut when they go for portfolio reviews.

Bottom line is, IF the State finds out that someone other than the parent/guardian is doing the homeschooling (unless they use an Umbrella School), then everyone loses and the State may mandate the children BACK to mainstream school.

While homeschooling in the state of Florida is very easy, the people who try to bypass the rules make it difficult for those of us who follow the rules.

Also be aware that if the child(ren) are enrolled in an Umbrella School ( a school paid to keep the records, send lessons, grades, etc) or a Virtual School (attending school from the comfort of home via computer) they are subject to different laws and not TRUE Homeschoolers (those who have flexibility in createing their school environment, control over the subjects learned, hours and days spent learning, etc).

The one thing I like about Fl Laws is that Homeschoolers can opt OUT of taking the FCAT/Dibels Test although they still have to take the SATs and sit for GED (but the Diploma still says HIGH SCHOOL GRAD).

Home schooling is legal in EVERY state of the Union. The laws are different from state to state.
