Can I hook up the sound for my DVD, PS3, and Dish to my tv and then run one optical cable to the 5.1 reciever?

I have a Samsung 71 series tv that I want to get everything hooked up on. It just bothers me that I would have to change so many settings to move from watching normal tv to playing the ps3. It would be awesome if the tv would just send whatever is coming through it's speakers out via optical into the surround reciever. Does it work like that?

Does your tv have digital inputs?  If so that would work.  If not, you have to connect to your receiver's digital input to get dolby digital 5.1 or dts.

If your TV is able to handle all those inputs, in theory it can work.

But the sound will in all likely hood be degraded.
