  1. yea you can...its better with a firewire though.

  2. You have not provided enough information... so you get ALL options:

iMovie will not recognize the USB port. Only the Firewire port... This presumes you are using a miniDV tape camcorder.

If you are using a flash memory or hard drive based camcorder, your Mac will see the camcorder and mount it to the desktop like any other USB mass storage device. Copy the video files to your hard drive - you will need to convert the files to a format iMovie can use. Go to http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/vi... to download and install StreamClip (free from Apple (otherwise, your Mac won't know what to do with the MPEG2 files.

If your camcorder uses miniDVD optical discs, NEVER put a miniDVD in a slot loading optical drive. If your Mac has a drwaer loading DVD drive, you can rip the video with HandBrake http://handbrake.fr/

If you do not have a drwaer loading optical drive, you can get an external DVD drive (I like LaCie), or, using the AV cable that came with the camcorder, you will need to use an "analog/digital bridge" from http://canopus.com/products/videoconvers...

  3. all macs have firewire so use this as it's far better.
