If so, how much can I expect to improve? I'm femal, 5'4" and 130lbs. I ran my first 5k a couple of months ago with a time of 23:32 and my second just a couple of weeks ago with a time of 23:25...however it was 40 degrees warmer (mid 80's) than my first run. So, I'd like to think that I improved more than my time shows. I have another race in 2 weeks. I've been training hard. Does it take years to knock minutes off of your time, or can you do in in a matter of weeks? What has your experience been? What was your first couple of 5k times compared to where they are now? Also, can I expect my times to be much better in the spring and fall compared to how they are now in the summer heat?

  1. Without knowing your age ........I'd say you may take off another 5-15 secs. on your 5K.  Thing is that it's summer so that means much warmer temps., much harder to do than when perfect weather (spring and fall).

How much do you train a week? the course (hilly or flat), temp. during race, and/or your current shape (amount of fat or endurance) all play important factors when racing.  I'd say if you continue to run and stay in the same place you are now difference in summer and other better weather will be 20-40 secs.

As for my experience....my first 5K (14 yrs. ago) was 17:51, but I was in great shape (from yrs. basketball 5-6 days a week and weights).  PR is 16:19 and worst is 18:30, that is well over 300 races.....staying consistent has been my main goal.  Good Luck to you, I'm sure you'll get better and improve if it's what you want!!

  2. dang thats fast for your first time.... ummm u can shave off time quickly by doing two a days of 2.5 mi. or more....

  3. No runners usually shave off time pretty rapidly. If they train hard, eat right, and do proper speed work. My first 5K time was 25:34 then  about a month later I ran a 5K in 23:40. Then I ran my next one 24:10. Two week later I ran a 5K in 22:40.
