I have a hard drive that was used to store media files, but now i want to switch the role of this drive to master and install winxp on it.

Can I install winxp on this harddrive, without formating and loosing all the files i have stored on it.

Keep in mind this drive has no os, or any other program installed it. its used strictly to store gigs of movies and music. Most places i asked they hesitate btu say its ok to install windows on it as long as i dont choose to format when I install.

Anyone got a reason why I shouldnt do this?

  1. Backup the files to something else!

It will be your only option.

You might be able to do a work around by partitioning the drive with a program like partition magic, but when you do the install, it could lose the mount and your information.

Since your dealing with GIGs of information, its not worth it.  Either get another HD for the OS or back your information up to an external or a friends computer while you rebuild.

  2. You have to take the Data off the Hard Drive and burn it to DVD or another Hard Drive. I recommend backing up the data and formating the drive first. You are going from a Storage Drive to a Primary Partition that will boot up the computer.

Whenever installing Windows always back up your data.

  3. No, you can only do something like that with certain linux disks, that offers you to try out the OS without format.

  4. No. It will be formatted by the installer.
