  1. u should be fine with vista. there have been a lot of new updates and it runs without any errors. I have vista ultimate and i was at first skeptical switching from xp but there are so many new features and it runs so much more smoothly than xp professional. make sure that your new computer has at least 2gb of ddr2

  2. Vista at first was a pain in the rear regions. Now however it's had it's first service pack, most items have now got drivers available and it's pretty stable. It was originally released as suitable for 512 meg, this was a joke. It crawled, however with that processor and 3gig of ram it should fly. Buy it, try it, I am willing to bet you will not want to change back after a month. Enjoy.

  3. You will be able to install XP, but I suggest you at least try Vista first. I was constantly going on about problems with Vista, and some of them are still fair points, but many of them have been fixed, or are negligible to the average user. As a technically savvy user, some of the changes in Vista would interfere with my user experience (such as running a server, running programs with the modified file structures), but for usual tasks you shouldn't have a problem. My mum, the least technically minded person I know, has been using Vista without a problem for almost five months now.

  4. Of course you can. But does HP have XP drivers for that laptop? IF not, then installing XP will be a waste...
