I just bought an experimental airplane, can I install a transponder my self? how hard is it to install it? steps?

  1. You can do the installation yourself, but an avionics tech must do the inspection to make sure it is done correctly, and an A&P must certify your weight and balance.  Its usually easiest to just have someone else do it.

Yes, you can install a transponder yourself, but It's not like putting a stereo in your car.  You still need to get it certified and tested by a qualified avionics person in order to legally use it, and the installation work needs to be inspected and signed off by a licensed mechanic. Even though the plane is experimental, all work done on it must conform to the same standards and regulations required for certified aircraft. Hardware, wiring, grounding, circuit protection, antenna location, etc. all take some skilled  know-how. Unless you have some experience doing this, let a pro do it, or buy the appropriate technical and study materials and do it under supervision of a pro. Don't forget to update your weight and balance data after it is installed.
