Question:

Can I install a new back boiler?

I currently have a 30+ year old Glowworm Majorca gas back boiler installed in my house and it broke down before christmas. Does anybody know if we are allowed to get a new back boiler installed and how much it will cost? The house is 70-80 years old and there are no spare walls to fit a condensing boiler, so a back boiler seems to be my only option!

  1. Nope, all boilers fitted now must be condensing boilers and theres no such thing as a condensing back boiler.

Agree with the suggestion of getting a combi fitted in your loft. if uve got plenty of room u might be able to have a normal boiler in your loft, keeping ur cylinder for the hot water, but might cost a h**l of a lot more to install as tank will have to be raised ect

  2. IF you can find a back boiler for sale then that's a very good start...

According to the new regulations only high efficiency (HE) boilers in either band A or B are allowed to be fitted unless certain criteria can be met...

It is virtually impossible that an HE boiler cannot be fitted in a property, there are huge ranges of products available from the boiler manufacturers to make the installers life easy when trying to site these modern boilers, i.e: Plume diverter kits, vertical flue kits and condense pumps etc, so there's a 99% chance you'll be able to find somewhere to site a high efficiency boiler in your property.

Why would you want to install another back boiler when they are so drastically inefficient?

    Hope this helps..

  3. its against the law for you to do it you need a corgi engineer to replace it for you.costly though

  4. have you thought about putting the boiler in the attic/loft space? most fitters can do this, just will cost a little extra to flu out and drain. you'd be hard pushed to find anyone who would fit an old style back boiler, pretty sure you must have a high efficency one these days. get someone in to have a look, you'd be suprised where you can fit a boiler now.

  5. If you can find one and have it fitted by a corgi registered no problem.

  6. We had a combi installed in our loft after our back boiler broke down.Making more space in the airing cupboard no tank.house cooler in summer no hot water pipes to heat house.

  7. There is no problem replacing your back boiler, so long as you get it done by a CORGI registered fitter.

  8. I doubt if you will find a back boiler anywhere. They went out of production about 10 years ago.Can you fit a combi in your bathroom or any bedroom at all, even a shed outside would do.
