Question:

Can I install a normal microwave above an electric cooker?

I have a very small kitchen. I have an electric cooker. The grill is below the hob.

I've seen that the regulation is for 650mm of clearance from the hob to a hood but does this apply to combustible material such as a wooden shelf?

I'm looking at putting a wooden shelf in as I can't drill into the back wall for Microwave brackets. The shelf will be supported between a cupboard on the left and the wall on the right.

Ideally I wouldn't put anything above the cooker but I really need the space.

  1. Well we have got a microwave above our built in cooker and the only problem we have is taking out very hot liquid items at such a height - reaching up above your head to take out something you can't see is difficult especially when it is scalding hot.  Something you don't think about at the time but can be a pain when you have to do it on a regular basis.

Probably something seriously unsafe with a toddler under your feet.

Edit:  Why don't you leave it in the dining room, but put it on a shelf at eye level for you but out of harm's reach for your toddler.

  2. Yes, install the microwave,

BUT, ensure that steam from the pots can't enter or condensate on the bottom of the microwave.

You will need to shield it some way, a wooden shelf.

Just watch out that hot food doesn't burst out at eye level at you!

Maybe there is a better solution to your problem

  3. never mind clearance; sounds like a lot of juice for one circuit

  4. Yep no problem mines above a single built in oven has been for 8 yrs with no scolds, burns or food blowing up in my face so,650mm from the top of your hob will be OK

  5. Yes.  We had a microwave above ours.....the microwave had a vent underneath....with the button beside the "on" button to turn the vent on for cooking......and our microwave was also surrounded in cabinet space to go along with the rest of the area...where only the front & bottom was  seen.  be sure to turn the vent on when cooking!!
