Can I install horizontal AC unit Vertically?

Hi,

I'm currently shopping for an AC unit for my room and I have an opening that is approx. 20 inches wide. Most horizontal AC unit I've found requires a min. opening of 25 inches.

I've found many vertical unit as well, but for some reason they are much more expensive than their horizontal counterpart (same BTU, etc.).

Is there anything in the way an AC unit function that would stop me from simply flipping an horizontal one sideway and mount it in a vertical opening? Or is it all just a big scam?

Thanks!

  1. DO NOT install a horizontal unit vertically. They are not designed to be run that way. Will just be a matter of minutes when it will quit running. The compressor has to be in the correct upright position. Try Walmart or another discount store where they have small 4000 btu units. They are usually very small and should fit in a 20 in opening.

  2. Geno is correct, you cannot tilt it vertically you will destroy the unit since the oil in the compressor is not designed to be used that way!

  3. Get the facts first, before you go out and buy the wrong unit
