Question:

Can I install sheet vinyl over laminate flooring?

The laminate in my kitchen is impossible to keep dry all the time because of children! Can sheet vinyl flooring be installed on top of it and removed later to sell the house? I don't know what we would do at the transitions in this case, though the baseboards would hold down the edges.

  1. Make sure that you use a fiberglass backed vinyl for your installation. You can use a double sided tape to keep the floor in place, although it may damage the laminate underneath, or keep it as a "loose-lay".

  2. No, never! the laminant is not fastened to anything. you'd be tossing money down the toilet.

Laminate in the kitchen, especialy with children, is not the best idea. Remove the laminate and save it for later if you feel that you have to put it back. If you use nice lino, you won't have to.

  3. If the transitions are parallel to the laminate panels, there won't be very much laminate to replace. If the laminate is still available for purchase, you can buy some extra laminate panels now, then attach the transitions directly to the laminate after loose-laying the sheet vinyl. You may want a layer of material between the laminate and sheet vinyl to reduce any dirt grinding into the laminate over time.
