I am debating whether to get registered as self-employed yet, but a client I am doing some freelance work for is asking me for an invoice, can I invoice him now? and get registered self-employed later? and what I decide not to get registered (If I have a full time job?)

  1. Once going self-employed you have three months in which to register with the Tax office.

Invoice your client and then get working on the paperwork.

  2. whether you work full time or not, you need to notify the inland revenue of freelance work. Invoice him and speak to them, they won't do anything bad to you because of it, they're not evil, but don't cross them or you will pay!

  3. You can invoice now, just keep a copy in case there's any comeback.

I would suggest you register ASAP, your customer is obviously a tax payer & will be submitting your costs as part of his accounts.

If you don't, you could just treat this as a one - off & try to plead ignorance when the tax man calls!
