K, I took ballet from the time I was five until I was ten. I was really good at it -- the best in my class, but then, tore between softball and ballet and pressured by my peers, I quit. I am sixteen now, and extremely overweight. (I'm 5'3, 200 pounds). Is it possible for me to take ballet classes again?

  1. Yes, I'm sure you can take classes. I don't think you would do very well though because of your weight. Talk to a few teachers. Lose that weight. You'll feel better and dance lighter.

  2. Oh ya!

Go for it! I am sure you will enjoy it!

  3. It's not impossible. There is little chance for going for a professional career but as a leisure activity, it'll be fine. But, there are certain things that you have to be prepared for.

There is a reason why ballerinas have to be of a certain weight. Firstly, it would be easier for the male dancers to lift them. Also, it would be relatively easier to perform leg lifts and jumps if a dancer is lighter. As most studios require their students to wear leotards during classes, you might be the target of some inconsiderate people. Do not let them get you down. I suggest that you check out the studios around your area and find one that you are most comfortable with before enrolling. Talk to the people, they might be able to give you some advice.

Going for consistent classes would help with your weight. On your own, you might want to exercise regularly and watch your meals. However, DO NOT on any occasion go on a crash diet. It is extremely unhealthy and very, very harmful to your body. You don't have to be as skinny as the professionals if you are taking classes just for fun. A normal BMI would be just fine. Take it one step at a time. Good luck.

  4. yh course it is. don't ever listen to what everyone else says when it comes to something you love and that you are good at. i love ballet and have been doing it for 11 years. at many times i have been told to stop because of many other responsibilities. and now i teach dance at a primary school. I'm doing my GCSE's at the moment andi still manage to keep up the dancing. i even got to london in the all england finals with a dance and so it proves that you can do whatever if you keep at it. there is no reason why you shouldn't dance your size should never be a problem. just go for it girl!!!
