Can I join a group without being invited by the moderator?

Yes, if the group is not a "closed" group (which requires an invite).  Just go to the group site and click the Join This Group button and follow the prompts.  

All group owners/moderators do have the option of accepting or rejecting membership requests.

if the group is closed, you can only join by getting an invite sent to you- all other groups you'll see on the home page top and bottom right "Join This Group" click and join :)
