My HALF brother has a criminal record for assault and possession of a class C drug, driving under aged etc. But he is my half brother and I don't really like him. I live in Kent, UK. I was told by a Police Sergeant and a PCSO that this would not affect me at all because it is done on my merits by I am not sure.

Can any one help, Police Officers with brothers/ Sisters with records...

Cheers ta.

  1. Family members with criminal records should have no effect on you, because you can't help the fact that they are your family. Now if you have current friends who have criminal records, that might be a problem.

  2. Well I was taught in the local corrections academy that family members are looked upon differently than friends. You can't really choose who your family is, if they screwed up you have no bearing on that. However, you can choose your friends, and if you  have any friends that are in the same boat as your brother, you may be looking at some problems.

  3. I'm from the US, but I have a brother who is an undercover detective and one who is a convicted felon.  The felon brother's record had no bearing whatsoever on the ability of the detective brother to become a sheriff's officer.

  4. Yeah you can. My brother wants to do the same and is told it won't be a problem that I have a record and have been in prison. Don't know why he or you want to do it though,

  5. Yes.

What your brother does has nothing to do with your career. It wouldn't matter if he was on death row.

  6. I have no idea how hiring is done in the UK.  In the states, the higher of a law enforcement and security level you have, the more your family relations are taken into consideration.  There is not cut and dry policy.  Pretty much, the better performer you are, the less these losers will be taken into consideration.
