Can I just buy a DVR or do I have to have service from a cable company or other provider?

You can buy your own DVR. You record by time & channel like an old VHS recorder did.

I think one of the best on the market right now is I think the best one on the market is the Philips DVDR3575H/37. WalMart sells them. As an added bonus you can also record DVDs on the unit so you can save your recordings forever if you want to.

Yes, you can just buy a DVR since the DVR does not care what type of video it is recording. Hope This Helps
