I'm taking Fluoxetine(20mg). I started with 10mg for 2 weeks now I'm in my second week taking 20mg. Fluoxetine is a Generic for Prozac. I don't want to take it anymore. I noticed I gained three lbs and that's not good for me. It took me along time to lose 15 lbs and I'm diabetic. I was taken off my Metformin Because Of the weight loss. I manage my diabetes with proper diet but since I started taking Fluoxetine (And I didn't change my diet) exercise 45min a day I still manage to gain some weight. Now I read that this drug slows down your metabolism. That I don't need. Do I still have to ween off Fluoxetine because I've been taking it for only four week. 2wks on 10mg and 2wks on 20mg?

  1. you must ween off of these drugs at the same pace you started taking the or the side effects kick in like depression and suicidal thought and actions.

  2. You need to talk this over with your doctor or doctor's. You may want to give them copies of the sources.

The weight gain could just be a coincidence, if you are a teen and still growing. The first source points out that fluoxetine tends to cause weight loss.  The send source says that there can be weight gain, but talks mostly about weight loss.

How have your blood sugars been?  If they are normal, is the weight a problem?

How has your mental status been.  You may still need to treat it.

  3. Do not just stop taking the medication, you have to come off the flouxetine slowly. Talk to the prescribing doctor.
