I was told that they are too 'delicate ' to leave out in a garden pond

  1. Depends where you are in the world, they would not survive a very cold snap, tropical countries only; how large the pond is and whether its filtered, they're more sensitive to any water problems and what else is in the pond, they cannot cohabit with common type goldfish, commons would outcompete them to food and bully them, they can damage a fantail's swimbladder very easily and potentially kill the fish. They would also need a protected pond from local wildlife, they wouldn't be able to escape as quickly as commons.

  2. Fantails shouldn't be kept outside if it gets cold as they live in a room temperature tank, also normal pond goldfish will attack it as it looks pregnant consequently it will get swim bladder problems which really affects the fish and it is likely to die. Fantails are prone to loads of diseases and putting it outside would increase the likely hood of it getting a disease.

If you feed you goldfish flake food it means the fantail has to go to the waters surface to get the food and as it tries to get the food it takes in a lot of oxygen and as a result of this a lot of the air gets trapped in its body making it more difficult for it to swim, it also leaves the fish floating upside down at the top of the water for a while where it is like to be an easy meal for a cat or a heron.

It is not a good idea to put a fantail outside.

    hope this helps
