After reading about DNA and haplogroups, I started thinking whether it is possible to establish names and faces of my ancestors? How did they look? What were their names? Where were they born? Is it possible to know through haplogroups?

  1. Yes

  2. Yes it is.

It Costs $100.00 at some national geographic site

  3. Do you know your mom and dad?  Do you know your grandparents?  Do you know many of your great grandparents?   If you can say yes to any of these questions, then you already have a start on knowing names of your ancestors.  Haplogroups are NOT going to tell you WHO your ancestors are. You can only determine that with sound research- person by person, generation by generation.  The haplogroups are just going to help you determine what type of ancestry you have and maybe the percentages. There is NO substitute  for good sound research.

  4. yes. Like my butt. Beavis and Butt Head. Uranus. haplogroups?? I dont know your on your own for the last one!!

  5. Am fortunate to have many old photos and the like of my ancestors.

One (my very favorite) is a painting, ca 1695, of one of my great grandmothers...she and I could be twins.  She is my avatar.  Others resemble...in uncanny ways...other members of my family.

As for names...from doing research for over 50 years...I have those.

Also the places where they were born...and, in some cases their very date of birth.

  6. No, you are not going to get that kind of detail unless you use the results in conjunction with research.  Also, only Y & Mitochondrial are used since they go back in a straight line virtually unchanged.  However, Y & Mitochondrial gives you a very small part of your total ancestry.

Y DNA is passed from father to son only.

Mitochondrial DNA is passed from mother to both sons and daughters but only the daughters pass it on to their children.

Most of your DNA is autosomal which you get 50-50 from both parents coming down from all your ancestors.  It is the only DNA that relates a female to her father or anyone to the spouses and their families of people in their direct Y & Mitochondrial lines.  Using autosomal is very complex and presently isn't as accurate as Y & Mitodchondrial but it is the only DNA that includes your total ancestry.  Companies are working to use autosomal but are not sure when it will be done.  It had to be the DNA that prove Sally Hemings was descended fromThomas Jefferson.

If you get back to your 6x great grandparents, barring any duplicates, you are descended from 510 individuals. Of those 510, you get your mitochondrial DNA from only 8 and if you are male in addition you get your Y DNA from only 8.

You get your autosomal DNA from all 510.  Since testing companies are only using Y & mitochondrial of those 510 people, 494 are being excluded.

Now Y & mitochondrial can help you match yourself with other family trees and in doing so you will probably disocver spouses and their families of people in your Y & Mitochondrial lines.

  7. Is it possible to establish names and faces of ancestors? Yes, but probably not genetically.  If you read about the haplogroups, you will note that even if you have a marker that shows you have a particular group, it is not a guarantee that you are part of that ethnic group. Some people say that if you have I1a haplogroup you are Viking, but in all actuality  this marker shows up on several different ethnic groups.  You also need to remember that people migrate.  If you find that your ethnicity is Asian, it does not mean that your ancestors were limited to that particular area.    If you wish to learn more about your heritage, you need to join a genealogy group and learn how to trace your ancestry.  Then you will be able to find out their names and where they were born, make connections with living relatives and it is possible to even find pictures to go with some of your records.
