Can I lay sod in August in Minnesota?

I want to lay sod this year. Can I lay it in August or September? Tips please. Thanks!

  1. If the weather is cooling off in Minnesota (I live in Illinois) in August, then yes. But, if like here in Ill., August is usually our hottest month. I would wait until EARLY September to lay sod. It shouldn't be getting too cold then. The ground will still be warm and will give the root system time to develop before going into dormancy.


  2. I suppose...I'm used to a much milder climate, but as long as you water water water, the roots should be able to take hold before the winter hits...

    Call local landscaping company and double check though.

  3. Yes, it should work out just fine for you.  Just make sure to properly prepare the soil for this...  till, adding topsoil / compost if needed, level.  Also make sure to roll the sod after it is put down to ensure good ground contact with the roots.  And last but not least water heavily.
