I'm on a work VISA from Canada in New York. I travel from Montreal to New York often.

I want to lease a new BMW in New York/New Jersey. Can I register and insure in Montreal, Canada?

  1. Nope.  You have to have US insurance with US leased car.

  2. Don't think the company will let you take it out of he country because if you default, they would have such a hard time retrieving the car. For sure, ask the leasing company!!!!!!!

  3. No, of course not.  Since you would not be returning it to the US, the car would have to be imported legally into Canada.  The leasing company would lose control, so they would not allow it.  Plus, you are not the owner of the property in question to start with.  Not only that, a leasing company in New York would not be licenced to collect Quebec sales taxes.

    Edit:

You are resident in New York, not Montreal.  You are travelling to Montreal, not moving.  Your insurance is based on where both you and the car live.  If you move to Montreal, you may be able to have the lease transferred to Montreal, assuming the model is compliant with Canadian standards, and is eligible for import, AT THE DISCRETION OF THE LEGAL OWNER, but if your job is in New York, you cannot register and insure in Montreal because you do not live there, period.

And if it were possible, you would have to pay all the taxes and duties up front, anyway.

You are trying to have your cake and eat it too, but it just doesn't work that way.
