Question:

Can I leave a hibiscus plant outside all year? I'm new to this plant.thanks?

The plant is in a large planter, up in Alliston Ontario,this is my first hibiscus plant

  1. a hardy hibiscus will do fine but if it is in a pot it may be tropical, if it has an orange or peach color, chances are it is tropical.

    Also tropical leaves tend to be more deeply lobed or finger like in shape.


  2. They can't take frost and it freezes where you a re living.  Make plans to get it inside for the winter, if possible.  I must disagree a bit with the previous answer about zones.  Even in zone 9 you must be alert for freezing nights. We have 10 to 15 of them every winter.

  3. Yes and No. You must know what climate zone you live in. I live in zone 7 and I can leave my hibiscus plant out over the winter but I must cover it with some pine needles and a thin sheet on any days below 45 degrees! If you live in zones 1 - 6 then no, don't do it! If your zone 7 cover it, and if you zone 8 or higher then you have nothing to worry about.
