Question:

Can I live comfortably off a Vet Tech salary?

I'm going to be going to school in a few weeks to become a Vet Tech. I've ALWAYS loved animals and wanted to be a Vet since I was little. But up until my junior year in high school I realized that I don't think I could handle doing surgeries on the animals so I changed my mind to become a Vet Tech. I know the salary is only around 30K a year, and that never bothered me because I want to do it more because of animals than money. But then it occured to me, what if I want to buy a house of my own and have kids and still live near the city (Chicago). Would I be able to do any of that on just a 30K salary comfortably, and not struggle? Or should I just do the 2 year Vet Tech program and if I want to make money go back to school and become a Vet?

I'd really appriciate any advice, especially from other Vet Techs.

Thanks! :)

  1. 30K a year isn't enough to support a family but it is enough to support yourself, well maybe if you rent. Hardly anybody can make it on a one income family so as long as you are married I don't see why it wouldn't be enough to purchase a house and support kids.

  2. on  $30k a year you'll be eating the same brand of cat food the patients are eating
