Question:

Can I make a basement window into a doorway?

I want to cut out the concrete blocks below an existing window to make a doorway. This wall used to be an outside wall until they closed in a porch on the other side of the wall. Right now I only have access to this room from the outside. I was planning on adding some 1.5" angle iron for additional support to the header.

Here is a picture of the window:

Are there any structural issues I am missing?

  1. i made my outside entrance from an existing window in a stone foundation that is 20 in. thick...so i'm sure you can make one in a block wall...figure your rough opening and rent a 14 in.. quickie saw with a masonry blade and cut it out...your plate will support an opening that size...

  2. You should have a drain installed at the bottom. It will be more draughty with a door. Steel beam would be good for headroom. I hope you are short. This door will be a head banger.

  3. lf your not going to widen the opening Thats something thats works great. The weight bearing header is already there . Go for it. l'm not sure what the angle iron is for, lf the header supports the weight above, taking the window out is no issue, l can't open link to see the picture, Make sure you have proper drain issue addressed

  4. there are building code requirements you have to follow and you need a building permit.

  5. If I am understanding you correctly you are wishing to create a doorway on a load bearing wall.If this is the case absolutely use the angle iron.I am guessing a 8" x 8" x 16" blocks are used,I would guess 3" to 3 1/2" angle is required. Most city/state follow UBC so a check with them for there procedures.
