Question:

Can I make a cat tree myself?

I'm thinking that I could get two pieces of 14 inch square plywood and some carpet to cover them, but how do I attach the carpet all the way around the plywood? Then I could get a thick trunk with a 4 inch diameter to hold the second piece of plywood up about 24 inches off the ground, but do they make dowels that large? I would attach it all with two nails through each piece of plywood into the trunk part - or should I use screws?

Finally, can I buy all of those supplies for less than it would cost to just get one from a pet store or walmart?

  1. forget the tree, just buy one of those bristly door mats, (the woven kind), our cats love them more than their scratching posts, or their tree! LOL!! if it doesn't work out, put it outside the back door. true stuff, good luck.

  2. if you go to ask.com, i am sure they will have instructions on how to build one.  good luck

  3.    I  would take a large cylinder, like a big coffee can or a large plastic jar like you buy party mix in, glue carpet around it, and nail a carpet covered board on top of the lid.  You can buy this stuff for next to nothing, or gather it.  Save the jar from the snack mix.   Go dumpster diving at the local new housing development.  You can get the board and carpet scraps from there.  You might have to spend a dollar for the glue at the dollar store.
