Can I make a home made Stethescope?

or some sort of " Listening device" , I have an outdoor Water Leak, probly a hydrant .. Any Tips???,,,I'm gonna try something myself but what,, I do not know!!!....thank-you!

Take a small empty container.Now stretch balloon rubber on its face tightly. Connect a small PVC or rubber tube to that container. Now your instrument id ready.to listen he lub-dub of your heart!
