I have a used radiator, and I'm thinking a good water pump taking water from an ice cold bucket and then putting a high output fan behind it would make an easy DIY a/c. any help or opinions? A website or reference would be helpful

  1. Would work, but buying all that ice would get expensive.

  2. take old bowls like for butter freeze them overnite each nite buy a box fan and use cardboard tape the cardboard around the fan to make a box sit the ice froze in the bowls in front or behind depends on the side you used the cardboard and stay cool but remember water and electric dont get along with you together very well. be safe. oh dont draw outside air in the air inside will circalate very nice

  3. Yes:  You can make a very effective heat exchanger like that.  The problem is it requires a large amount of ice.  If you live above an ice house this may not be a problem.  For the rest of us, electricity generated air conditioning is cheaper, and easier.

  4. I don't believe this will provide any more/as much  cooling than the fan alone would provide.

The radiator is designed to use air blown through the vents to cool over heated water/coolant. While it may work in reverse it would be a very inefficient cooling system.

IMO you would get better results placing your fan behind the bucket of ice and avoid the steps necessary of feeding cooled water through the radiator.
