Question:

Can I make a knitting pattern my own?

It was a magazine pull out pattern from Woman's Weekly for a kimono cardi. I found it unneccessarily complicated, so I have changed the stitch patterns from moss stitch to stockingette, and changed the edgings from garter to K1 P1 rib. I have also knitted it from back to front rather than front to back (it is knitted in one piece).

Can I make the pattern my own? I only want to use it on my knitting blog.

  1. NO! Why would you want to put it on your blog and what would be it's purpose? The good way to do that is if you aren't charging for this redesign, give credit to the original designer, and just offer it up as a "simplified" version of said pattern. Have you joined Ravelry.com? it's an amazing online resource for knitters and crocheters and this topic comes up a lot for discussion in it's forums.

  2. Any sweater pattern is a variation of the same basic designs, either in one piece (top down, bottom up or side to side), or in pieces.  Everyone is reinventing the wheel by adding different stitches, finishes and shapes.

Your pattern was "inspired by" the original, but you have made it your own...use it.
