Can I make a spark plug spark with a 9 volt battery and capacitor?

If I use the 9 volt to charge up a capacitor, can the cap discharge enough power to make a automotive spark plug spark? If so, what kind of cap should I use, and how should I wire it?

  1. A capacitor can only charge up to the same voltage as what is being supplied to it.  If you've got multiple capacitors you can conect them in series then charge them up one at a time and their combined voltage will be felt much like connecting a bunch of batteries in series.  In order to arc across a spark plug it usually takes about 10000 volts so you'll need quite a few capacitors.

  2. Ordinary 9 volt dry cells can not produce enough spark. But the storage types of battery when the capacity of more than 4 mfd capacitrs are used you can do only instand sparking. When the current is discharged again you have to charge the capacitor. But for continues operation you must convert D.C volt to A.C volt and step up to not less than 8000 volt by step up transformer for the spark plug to work.

  3. NO

A spark PLUG takes high voltage across a gap...one capacitor...no matter how large will only charge to 9 volts from the battery...and the moment connected to the circuit will go down from there.

However...you can easily spark a plug with only 9 volts and an automotive ignition coil that you can get for less then 20 bucks at any automotive store

Ping me again and I will tell you how to wire the ignition coil if you need help...and the capacitor will improve this circuit as well..
