Question:

Can I make ambrosia salad with what I have?

I know I'm missing a couple things, but I'm pretty sure I have most of what I need for a basic ambrosia salad. Anything more that I need, I'll be picking up at the store shortly. What I've got -

Canned mandarin oranges

Canned pineapple chunks

Fruit cocktail

Whipped cream

I know that I still need -

Shredded coconut

Small marshmallows

Can it be made with these items? Also, I have fresh fruits I'd like to use, but I'm not sure if they'd be any good. I have strawberries and grapes I thought about trying...and I also have apples and bananas but I fear they will brown to quickly. One other question...How long is appropriate to let it chill in the refrigerator before serving?

  1. I use apples cubed, orange slices, banana slices, cherries in top (the sweet syrupy kind you buy in a glass jar).  I put those in layers in a glass bowl with straight sides for viewing, then I pour orange juice on top.  

    The orange juice's citric acid prevents the apples and bananas from turning brown!

    I would think what you have is good.  I would pour the juice from the canned oranges on top when finished.

    Yum!  A healthy desert.


  2. I do add grapes to my recipe and I slice them in half.  I also add shelled walnuts that are chopped up.  The dressing I use is sour cream and sugar mixed together.  So much better than whipped cream.  Make sure your canned fruit is drained really well because it tends to get runny if not.

  4. Absolutely!  That's what I use.  Don't use the apples or bananas, because they'll get brown (and apples are too crunchy for it).  I've made it the day ahead, or my grandkids have eaten it right away - so chill it for as long as you want:)

    AMBROSIA

    2 c. heavy whipping cream

    1/2 c. sugar

    1 tsp vanilla extract

    1/2 tsp almond extract

    1 large can mandarin oranges, drained

    2 large cans fruit cocktail, drained

    1/2 c flaked coconut

    3-5 c. miniature marshmellows

    Beat cream with sugar & extracts until very stiff peaks.  Fold in fruits, marshmellows & coconut ...... chill

  5. Yes, thats pretty much what I put in mine except that I add some sour cream too.
