I'm going to be a sophmore. Well currently this summer I have been taking gymnastic courses every Wednesday for about 5 weeks and I have 3 more courses to go, my gym teacher said that the gymnastics team in my school requires no experience and I'm not really sure if I can amount to all the seniors and juniors and even the sophmores who were in the team freshman year. Is there still a chance I can amount to them?

  1. It sounds like you'll do fine on the high school team.  At my school you also don't need any experience, and since you're taking classes that just helps you more.  You mite not get to compete that much because you're just stating but if you keep working hard, maybe next year you will.  I'm also a sophmore, and i noticed that it all depends on what kind of team your school has.  At my school there are a lot of competitive gymnasts that do club teams (i just started culb team this year) that are a lot better than i, and compete a lot more than me, but i don't worry about that, i just go to practice and meets to have fun and get better.

so enjoy yourself, and have FUN!! good luck ♥

  2. I was a gymnast for 12 years, 2 of those on a High School team, and I've coached for 8 years.  On our team, there were no cuts, everyone could compete but natually only the best scores would count toward the team score.  There were girls on the team that were level 9 club gymnasts and some that just wanted to try it out for the first time.  We were allowed to compete either an optional (level 7-10) routine or compulsory (level 4-6)  Also, you can choose to be an All-Around gymnast or an event specialist.  If you do floor or beam, they will help you make up a routine with the appropriate level of skills in it for you.  Also, if all else fails, most people can learn the front handspring vault and compete it pretty well.  What's nice about how WA state did it was that a handspring vault (L5) could score just as high as a tsukahara (L8) because it was weighted to be fair.

About measuring up to your team mates, you probably should not even worry about that.  No one is going to expect you to catch up in a few weeks what took the better gymnasts years to learn.  The way I always saw it was some people are experienced, some not, and everyone is important to the team.
