I have a recipe for baked mac and cheese that i really like and i am just wondering if i can simply substitute the macaroni with potatoes to make potatoes au gratin. I am mostly just concerned with it either coming out too dry or too wet because of the change.

in the macaroni and cheese, i just put:

macaroni

cheddar cheese

evap milk

milk

butter

eggs

salt

  1. Yummers!!!  Sounds great to me!!!

  2. Yes, you sure can.  Just maybe watch your liquid level as you're baking it.  The potatos may not soak up as much as your macaroni does.

  3. I would not add the eggs and you don't need the milk.

Here's a simple video that is just alittle over 1 minute long that shows step by step instructions:

The only thing you are missing is 1/4 cup of bread crumbs.

    Basically

Layer sliced potatoes in a greased casserole dish, brush with melted butter, season with salt and pepper, top with cheese, then repeat. On the top layer pour 1/2 cup of evaporated milk (or half n half) then top with bread crumbs. Cover with foil and bake at 425 for 30 minutes, then remove foil and bake an add'l 15 minutes until golden brown.

    Bon Appetit!
