Question:

Can I marinate chicken in bbq sauce, then cook it? Or do I cook it then put bbq sauce on it when its done?

I have frozen skinless boneless chicken b*****s that I am defrosting right now. Can I add a little tomato sauce to the bbq sauce to stretch it out some? Have half a bottle left

  1. Your BBQ sauce is going to stretch much further if you use it after the chicken is cooked. If you are grilling, sauce first is a huge no no, as your chicken will burn.

    To stretch your sauce, use good old fashioned ketchup and mustard. 2 parts ketchup 1 part mustard. (You can add a little pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, hot sauce, or horse radish depending on your taste).

    I would avoid tomato sauce, unless you have a lot of other ingredients and time. It requires too much work to get it to taste like a BBQ sauce.


  2. i like to marinate it for a few hours then while im cooking it continue to baste it just a little and then put a little dry rub on it

  3. if you add it while it is defrosting, it will defrost faster and absorb the sauce into it.. Leave a little left, add some Worcestershire sauce and brush it on the chicken while cooking...

  4. You can do it either way.  If you cook it w/ bbq sauce on it, be sure no open flames are close to the meat or the sauce will burn.

  6. If you want to make BBQ chicken in the same quick time, defrost the chicken and marinate in a salad dressing, such as "Good Seasons" Italian dressing.  Probably one of the best dressings to use on chicken or any other types of meats.  It comes out incredibly delicious.

  8. I like to season my chicken and cook til almost done then add the bbq sauce. If you are bbq on a grill the bbq sauce will sometimes burn before the chicken is done; and if you are baking in oven, the juice from chicken will make bbq sauce run of while baking. So I like to put my sauce on last.. just long enough to be baked on (about 10-15 min). That way you have good saucy chicken.

    I like to add ketchup and water to my sauce to stretch it.

  10. Yes you could add the tomato sauce, but in all reality, I just add a little water, it will tame down the bbq taste a little, then marinate, then while grilling spread on the chicken.  Just while marinating, poke the chicken b*****s with a fork, so the marinade can soak in a little.

  11. I would marinate it in some italian salad dressing.  Then bbq.  When almost done, add the bbq sauce.  If you cook it from the beginning, you run the risk of scorching since there's alot of sugar in the sauce.

  12. I prefer to add the sauce afterwards upon plating up, or stir it in at the last minute if I want it heated.  

  13. Depends on how you're cooking it.  If you're grilling it, then adding bbq sauce before you've even started cooking it means the sauce is likely to burn before the chicken is cooked through.  If you're cooking it in the oven, then you shouldn't need to worry about it.

    Most bbq sauces have a lot of tomato in them, so you can probably add tomato sauce to the bottle to stretch it some.  Personally, I'd just grill them and put sauce on them with about 5-10 minutes left; that way it caramelizes a little without burning, and since you're not using it for a marinade you don't need as much (never use a raw meat marinade to coat meat when it's nearly done cooking unless you've boiled it for a while first).
