Question:

Can I mix dirt and mulch together for fill that I'm grading up against the foundation?

I've had a water issue in my basement, so I've graded up the dirt around the house to remedy the problem. I just have the front of the house left, which is going to require the most amount of dirt. I have many bags of mulch (wood chips) that I would like to mix in with the dirt so it will go longer. Is this okay, or will it create more problems for me?

  1. NO the mulch will RETAIN the water and encourage insects that you will not want coming into your house.

  2. You  need dirt.  DO NOT mix these two.  Mulch itself serves one need, and earth will solve the other.  Earth will create the slope that is needed to create a shedding for water.  Mulch will just keep it there.  I am not sure how much you need, but you can buy 40# bags for .99 cents, then cover will mulch.  Gravel is not an option either.  good luck.
