Can I mount a TV if there are no studs in the wall?

I would like to mount my plasma above the fireplace, but there are no studs. Is there any way to mount it there? Another option is to put it in the corner. Do they have mounting kits to put a tv in the corner of a room?

  1. If there are no studs then what is holding the drywall up?

Once you get the TV mounted how do you plan on getting the wires hooked up to it?

Are you mounting it above a mantel?

Where do you plan on keeping your DVD player and cable/sat box?

Mounting a TV above a fireplace is a bad idea.  I know it looks cool in all those plasma TV ads but it's just not practical.  Long high definition cable (HDMI, component) runs between the TV and DVD player/cable/sat box can get very expensive and hiding the wires can range from difficult to impossible let alone getting the 110 volt power up there to run the TV.  The height of the screen should be such that your eyes are at the same height of the center of the screen when you are seated.

Your best bet is to get a nice stand that compliments your TV and components and be done with it.

  2. I would go for the corner. Once you attatch that to the wall your stuck. Then you have to fix your holes when removing. Eye level is best for tv's. If you get a good stand all your wires can be run in the rails so you dont see them. The bracket for the tv isnt cheap, unlees you have one already. Go for the corner.

  3. yes as you just find a secure mounting point or buy secure mountings

  4. There is also the issue of possible heat damage to the set from the fire.

  5. In addition to the answers here, there are also pipes that can hand down from the ceiling. You can do a search for "ceiling pipe mount." Although, that probably won't look as nice as what you're envisioning.

They do have "drywall anchors" that can handle upwards of 80lbs, but I wouldn't trust a plasma television with them.

And yes, there are corner mount brackets... I know Da-Lite makes one. I'm posting a link here just so you can see it easily. I've never purchased from the store it's linked on, though.

  6. We mount on fireplaces all the time. It would help to know what the wall above the fireplace is made of. Let's assume that if you have no studs, it's brick or some other masonary material. So long as there is a metal flue inside the brick housing, you can do this easily, and safely.

Buy a 1 1/4" masonary bit and drill 4 mounting holes, then use large toggle bolts (the ones that will barely fit through a 1 1/4" hole) to hold the mount to the fireplace.

If you have drywall with some wierd stud pattern in the wall, you might have to open the wall and mount a piece of hardwood ply, the same thickness as your drywall, across the studs, then mount the TV on the ply. A drywall repair guy should be able to cover the ply and make it look like the wall.

In the corner, you can use a single stud articulating mount, if the TV is 32" or smaller, right in the corner by lagging it to the king stud. If your TV is bigger, it's best to hang it from the ceiling joists.
