Can I move the platy fry?

They just seem so small, I'm worried if I move them out of the tank completely they'll die from shock or something.

Is it ok to move them?

I have a RANGE of fry. Some are over a few months old, to only a week old. (we have like 15 total in our 10 gal at the moment). I want to move all the fry out, but the really young ones are just so very tiny...

Is it ok to move them?

  1. yes, maybe move them to a bag, so you can float them in the water to get the temp right. then mix waters etc as if introducing a new fish.

platys are very hardy fish, i have a few in a breeding trap at the moment!

  2. You are absolutely correct.

Don't move them as you may cause sudden death to the fry.

As extreme change in water temperature and environment may cause your fry from getting white spot and fungus.

I would advised you to wait for at least I month more before you remove your fry.

Try to change only 25-30% of tank water 1-2 month a week depend on the tank water condition.

Try to mix their diet such as larvae, daphnia, liquid food and also some small fry pellet.

And sometime feed them with vitamins to promote their colouration and growth in your fry  after they had reach a month old.

    Good luck with your fry:P

  3. Hi,

No they will cope with the move, what i do when i get fry is fill their new tank with water out of the aquarium they were bred in this way its not too much of a shock for them. But as long as the temp is right then they will be fine. Don't put an electric powered filter in their new tank as this will suck them in and i am talking from experience, i use an air powered filter in my baby tanks.
